Do you remember the first time you applied a colour? Sure you were probably a little excited and absolutely itching to see the result.  Do you remember any thing else itching, like the clients scalp, or even your hands and what about that pungent smell, do you remember the fumes?  Those fumes were ammonia vapour and there's a simple reason you didn't like the smell.

It's your bodies way of saying "Hey, this is not good for you.  Don't breath it in!"

Dermatitis

Perhaps you didn't notice any irritation when colour first contacted with your skin however, some colourists do. Especially if you have a pre-existing skin condition like dermatitis.  Or you may have had dermatitis develop after repeated exposure to hair colour. After reviewing information on the ingredients of common hair  colours and the effects of those colours I understood WHY so many of my colleagues, friends and staff were suffering from skin conditions.  On the right is a small exert from Ammonium Hydroxide, a common ingredient in hair colour, cautions (we are not trying to scare you this is the only factual information about this compound.) And below on the left is an extracted statement from a similar source on cautions relating to pre-existing medical conditions associated with inhalation of the vapour.  At this time It is important to state that we do not have the information relating to TLV (Threshold Limit Value, the recommended minimum exposure) for every product used by professionals.  There are many factors influencing the amount each worker may be exposed to per day.  It can vary greatly due to proximity, manufacture of product, length of time per application, number of applications, ventilation of work space.
bane,

As you can see Dermatitis has been listed in addition respiratory ailments that may be affected by exposure. In my personal experience I am familiar with physicians advising that the fumes from colours were responsible for damage to the sinus membranes and a chronic sinus and respiratory ailment. The advice "Stop using the colour or get out of hairdressing, any exposure to these fumes will only make the problem worse"  We have already seen may people clients and professionals come and investigate the colours we use because of there own experience with health issues.

The good news

This product is so much safer in fact it has been referred to as the worlds safest professional hair colour for use during pregnancy.  Farouk systems were successful in providing the our industry with the worlds first totally ammonia free hair colour.  There are no nasty fumes and the secret to this is replacing the ammonia with ethanolamine that has been extracted from corn.  This is the key to the system.

Allergies

You can suffer from or develop and allergy to ammonia the symptoms of which can be an itchy scalp and or you start coughing or get watery/red/itchy eyes when you have your hair coloured or while working with colour. If this happens to you or you are pregnant, or a cancer suffer undergoing chemotherapy where your liver function is often impaired resulting in an inability to process ammonia it is advisable you choose an ammonia free product.

Perhaps one of the most remarkable experiences I can site is a salon owner who was forced to stop hairdressing and due to health and hyper sensitivity to products issues unless she found an option. I offered my salon and samples of the product for her to try. This salon owner flew over 500km to Brisbane in hope she would not have to give up her career.  After we took time to answer her questions she began a colour correction service on her model.  less than 5 minutes into the service her skin was irritated by the gloves we gave her. She removed the gloves and applied with her bare hands.
She was fine after over 3 hour of working with her client there was no irritation and the client loved her hair!  Two days later she called to thank us again and decided to take the products for her salon.

Since introducing these colours to my salon several years ago, I have noticed illness among my senior staff (not including injury eg sprained wrist) has dropped to a third.  I cant honestly verify that this is solely due to the use of Farouk colours. However I feel that if my team has less stress due to exposure to chemicals perhaps their organs spend less time cleaning out the toxins they breathe in and more time fighting off infection.

One thing is for certain I can barely tolerate the smell of the brands I used to use before Farouk. Now I enjoy my work more the clients enjoy their colours more and my whole team loves the products.
